Members of the Undergraduate Student Government are elected by their respective constituency in the undergraduate student body. All Michigan Tech students have the right and responsibility to vote for their USG representatives, and all students can run for open positions!
There are two important periods for each election: the nominations and the actual voting. Nominations are done through a Google Form, and any eligible undergraduate student can be nominated for any vacant position.
After nominations are finished, each of the nominees who've accepted their nomination meet with the USG Secretary to discuss the election and their campaign.
Finally, the voting election occurs on Involvement Link, where students can vote for the positions that they are a part of. There may be more candidates than positions vacant, so voters should be sure to read the descriptions for each candidate before making their selection.
There are 3 main elections that happen throughout a school year. During the beginning of the Fall semester, the first-year and residential representative elections take place. During the Spring semester, the Executive Board, At-Large, and Body Representative elections are held.
First-Year and Residential Representatives represent a large portion of the undergraduate student body, and thus should be properly represented on USG. Anyone who lives in the residence halls or is a first-year can run for the open positions offered by this election.
The E-Board and At-Large Representative Elections are very important to the Undergraduate Student Government, as it determines the operational heads of the executive body. This election is comprised of two portions: Executive Board Members and At-Large Representatives
Executive Board Members consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and are elected in for a term of one year. E-Board positions that are made vacant in the middle of a term are filled internally by the Undergraduate Student Government body. There are no college requirements to becoming an Executive Board member, apart from the basic requirements to be on USG.
At-Large Representatives are those who serve as important representatives to the student body, but do not fulfill any of the other position requirements.
Traditional Representative Elections are conducted in the Spring semester, and consist of various vacant positions, including class year and college positions. Each college is allocated a certain number of representatives based on their size to equally represent all students.
